📅 Routine to get ready for the day

💪Efforts to address recruitment challenges in the agriculture industry

Advice to new leaders to prioritize transparency and direct communication

First, a few metrics:

Time as HR Director at D'Arrigo Bros: 2 years

Total management experience: 6 years

Currently managing: 4 employees

Rachel's leadership style:

How do you get ready for the day?

Each morning, I make it a priority to touch base with my team members to align on priorities and address any immediate concerns or support needs. I then review my calendar to check the day’s meetings and appointments, ensuring I prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance. Establishing clear, achievable goals for the day is crucial, so I set both long-term project objectives and daily tasks to stay focused and productive.

How do you approach problem-solving?

I approach problem-solving methodically by first defining the end goal and then working backwards to determine the necessary steps to achieve it. I like to weigh all options carefully and think outside the box to find innovative solutions, ensuring the best possible outcome.

What's an example of a challenge you're facing right now?

Recruitment in the agriculture industry is increasingly challenging due to a combination of factors. Not only are we competing with the $20 minimum wage in fast food industries, the economic slowdown, exacerbated by stringent regulations from the California government, has led to mass layoffs and business closures across various sectors. Inflation is also on the rise, further complicating the situation. These factors, coupled with labor shortages, strain recruitment and retention efforts. Businesses are forced to consider raising wages or seeking alternative solutions to address the labor gap, placing additional burdens on already struggling companies. Fortunately, D'Arrigo is a strong, stable 100-year-old company that makes decisions to support long-term growth and always takes its employees into consideration. This commitment to employee welfare not only fosters a positive work culture but also makes it easier to retain employees when they feel valued and experience the company's supportive culture daily.

How do you motivate your team to perform well?

To motivate my team to perform well, I treat them as equals and create a supportive environment where everyone feels valued. I encourage open communication and actively seek their input on decisions, fostering a sense of ownership. I provide opportunities for professional growth, recognize and celebrate their achievements, and offer constructive feedback to inspire and empower them to reach their full potential.

Who are your leadership role models?

One of my leadership role models and sources of inspiration is Elon Musk. His innovative spirit have consistently pushed the boundaries of what's possible in various industries. However, on a personal level, I deeply appreciate the professional support and mentorship I receive from my manager, Marla Henry, VP HR and colleague, Sylvia Lopez, Employee Relations Director. Their guidance and expertise have been invaluable in shaping my leadership journey, and I am grateful for the many lessons they have taught me during my time here.

What advice would you give someone new to leadership?

As someone new to a leadership role, my advice would be to prioritize transparency and direct communication with your team members. Being transparent about goals, expectations, and decisions fosters trust and clarity within the team, allowing everyone to be on the same page. It's essential to communicate openly about both successes and challenges, as this encourages a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. Additionally, actively listen to your team members' feedback and concerns, as their perspectives can offer valuable insights and contribute to a collaborative environment. Remember to lead by example, demonstrating integrity, empathy, and a willingness to learn and grow as a leader. Building strong relationships based on trust and open communication will lay the foundation for effective leadership and team success.
